Workshop with STEAR & SDU RIO
Workshop: Turning Research into Impact
For researchers curious about entrepreneurship
How can your research, inventions or insights grow beyond the laboratory and create impact in the industry?
This workshop is for researchers and professors who are curious about innovation and entrepreneurship, whether you already have an idea or are simply exploring the possibilities. It’s all about sparking curiosity and freely exploring how research can be translated into innovation and put into real world application.
Who is this workshop for?
Participate if you:
Are a PhD student, postdoc, researcher, professor or Innovation Pilot at SDU
Are interested in how research can create value outside the university through a spinout
Want to explore entrepreneurship without pressure or expectations
👉 You do not need a concrete idea to participate.
👉 You do not need entrepreneurial experience.
Curiosity is the only requirement.
What is the purpose?
The purpose of the workshop is to:
Kickstart your entrepreneurial thinking
Explore how research-based ideas can become innovation or spin-outs
Introduce the support opportunities available through SDU RIO and STEAR
Workshop agenda:
-
A research-based spin-out shares their journey from academia to an operating company.
-
Thomas Ebel shares why it matters that ideas move beyond the university and the lab. Drawing on his own journey between academia and industry, he highlights personal motivation, the societal and commercial impact researchers can create and how small steps can lead to meaningful innovation. He also illustrates an example through the SDU Sønderborg startup Dancap.
-
In small groups, you will explore:
How your research, work or ideas could create value
Who it might benefit and why
What problem it could solve in the industry
You will:
Work with either your own idea or explore ideas together with others
Use simple models and frameworks (no prior knowledge needed)
Brainstorm freely using post-its and group discussions
In the final session, you have the opportunity to share your thoughts of your possible barriers, what you would need to move forward and how we could help you.
-
We’ll conclude with a short introduction to how SDU RIO and STEAR collaborate, and what support options exist for research-based ideas. We’ll share how ideas can move – step by step – towards innovation or a possible spinout.
No commitments. Just clarity over possibilities.
-
We’ll finish off with refreshments and networking to wrap up the day
Slight changes in programme can occur. Event is held in English.
From Prototype to Scale: Mechatronics in Sønderborg

How does market leader LINAK drive innovation within linear actuators – and how do they continuously adapt to new market demands?
That’s what Jens Jørgen Nielsen will share at this event, where he presents not just one, but two concrete cases showing how LINAK keeps innovating and improving by aligning their products with the market and real customer needs. Through these two examples, Jens Jørgen Nielsen will inspire entrepreneurs to test the value and assumptions behind their innovation, learn from the results, adjust - and test again. To tune in to the innovation that matters. -
Olgierd will give insights into the evolution of mechatronic components enabled by 3D printing. From his involvement in establishing the 3D printing environment at SDU in Sønderborg to today, where local companies actively use these technologies to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Presented by center leader Lars Duggen.
-
Get a look into the invisible revolution happening inside SDU. Milad will talk on the massive, untapped potential in our everyday heating and cooling systems - and how mechatronics is the key to unlocking it. Milad will give insights into how we are moving beyond simple switches to implement "self-aware" energy systems, and how they fuse smart hardware (sensors, valves) with intelligent brains in the cloud. This fusion of mechanical engineering and system controls is opening a new frontier for high-tech startups.
Presented by center leader Lars Duggen.

The Impact of Co-founders
The Impact of Co-founders
- and why you should become one
Side by side with every great founder stands an equally driven co-founder.
Many of today’s most promising startups begin in research labs or technical environments – but what they often need to accelerate the startup further is a co-founder with a complementary mindset. That’s where you come in.
Join this event to discover how you can play an active role in building high-potential startups today or in the future, even if you didn’t invent the technology yourself. Discover the real impact you can contribute to as a co-founder, get introduced to upcoming cases from the startup and research community and hear directly from people who made the leap.
